I have a bunch of SGA fic sitting around waiting to be recced, but until I get that into any semblance of order, here's a random smattering of other stuff I've read recently.

Due South:

Gunslinger by tigs - A fabulous gen story about the two Rays in the aftermath of Fraser. Fraser is a force of nature and when he returns to Canada he leaves behind two men who have been profoundly changed by their association with him, in ways they don't even realize until they trip over them in the ordinary course of their lives. I love the friendship and the partnership between Ray and Ray here, the combination of smart-ass remarks and genuine caring that is in itself a legacy of Fraser.

(insert your own title here) by lyra_sena, art by slodwick - A hilarious epistiolary fic written for the

ds_flashfiction Badfic Summary Challenge. In other words, a high school AU told entirely through notes and letters. Absolutely priceless.

Horatio Hornblower:

Untitled Archaeology Fic by _oggy_ - Fictional scholarship in the absolute best tradition of the fandom. And yes, I love that this fandom has a tradition of fictional scholarship. A pair of marine archaeologists excavating wreckage near Caudebec-en-Caux turn up more than they ever dreamed of while researching the provenance of an engraved pocket watch once belonging to Captain William Bush. A pair of fabulous OCs and a wealth of detail make this a truly fantastic and unique piece of fic.

Temeraire/His Majesty's Dragon:

first, breathe by penknife - The beginning of the story, as told from Temeraire's pov. A lovely ficlet that complements the first chapter of the book wonderfully. I have great hope for this fandom.

Sometimes, I look to fic for deep emotional resonance and connection with the characters and smart storytelling.

And sometimes I just want something really, really hot. I want fic that leaves me breathless and distracted and feeling a little dazed. I want to feel the heat curling up from the base of my spine, that shiver of pure sex, the visceral GUH of really good smut.

And more often than not I want a bit of kink with that guh.

I talked about my kinks. Here's a semi-random collection of fic I've read or reread recently that feeds them.

Mercy by astolat - Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay - Aliens made them do it fisting fic. With bondage. By Shalott. Really, do I need to say anything more?

But Some Things Never Stop Being Funny by astolat - Stargate: Atlantis, Rodney McKay/Girl!John Sheppard/Ronon Dex - In less that 1700 words, Shalott manages to hit no less than 3 of my major bulletproof kinks. It's a genderfuck threesome, with Girl!John very much in the middle and it's my current gold standard for scorching hot smut.

Pushover by astolat - Mr. and Mrs. Smith, John/Jane - A tasty little bit of role reversal that is oh so very very hot.

The Hearts of Watches by mmmchelle - Stargate: Atlantis, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard - He expected John to come to him, but he didn't. He turned away. Then he knelt on the floor by the end of the bed and leaned forward, resting his head and shoulders on the bed. // Rodney's breath did more than catch. John was presenting himself, offering himself--to Rodney--and Rodney couldn’t imagine anything more erotic. I'm with Rodney on that one. So. Much. GUH.

Wrong, Right, Sublime, Sublimation, Latitude and Nonparametric by sajinn - Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay - Three encounters, each told twice, once from John's pov, once from Rodney's. Each one is insanely hot and seared into my brain, especially John bottoming from the top to absolutely scorching effect in the third set. Taken together they're a gorgeous and strangely vulnerable look at the beginning of a relationship.

Chiaroscuro & Pushing by micehell - Stargate: Atlantis, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard - There's no actual sex until the second story, but it's the first scene of Chiaroscuro that I keep coming back to: John Sheppard in a dark alley, desperate for a nameless, faceless fuck and too afraid to let himself want anything more. Damaged John, pushy Rodney and hot hot hot wall-sex, everything a girl could want.

Edges by neery - Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay - D/S with a side order of knife-play done in a way that is sincerely believable to the characters. The nervous uncertainty as they try out their roles and Rodney's growing confidence make this story all the hotter. As you might have noticed, I have a bit of a thing for bottom/semi-submissive John Sheppard and this satisfies that kink in spades.

The Limitations of Force by z_rayne - Stargate: Atlantis, Ronon Dex/John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagen - There's a lot of enzyme porn in this fandom, but this is undoubtedly the hottest piece out there. An enzyme-fueled threesome with John very much in the middle. Fierce and dirty and held together by a fabulous John pov.

Untitled by sprat - Due South, Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski - Again this fic works for me because the bondage and light D/S dynamic is kept very in character. Fraser's innate courtesy gives him trouble, but once he gets into the spirit of things, oh MY does he get into the spirit of things. Serious GUH.

I've restricted myself here to stuff I haven't recced before, which is why there's no Hornblower on the list. Also, I know there's plenty of good PoTC kink, but I don't have my links anymore and if I'd waited to go search for it this thing would never have been posted.

A Dare's a Dare by cesperanza -- A Fraser/RayK Ms. Fraser story. Ray finds a dress in Fraser's closet and starts asking questions. He is intrigued by the answers he receives. This story is glorious, hot and sezy and yummy kinky. Watching the Ms. Fraser episode, I was rather struck by exactly how good Fraser looked half in and half out of drag -- several rewinds worth of struck -- and apparantly I was NOT the only one. But what I loved most about this story is the way it deals both with the character's sexualities and implied histories and with dates and expectations and the contents of Ms. Fraser's purse.

Busted and Tapestry by anonymous co -- The long involved Post-Call of the Wild Fraser/RayK series that seriously ate my brain a couple weeks ago. And an example of how a story can meet almost non of my Due South-specific kinks and still drive me seriously around the bend with the hotness and the characterizations and the utter right-ness of the relationships.

American Way by resonant -- One of the earliest Due South fics I read. I can blame my starting to read Due South rather a lot on the fact that

resonant has only written one brilliant Hornblower fic but rather a lot more Due South stuff. So, way back in about October, I loaded a bunch of Resonant's fic to my palm. Believe it or not I read this story -- about the americanization of Benton Fraser -- while standing in line waiting to vote on election day. I think I needed this story that day. It is insanely sexy, romantic in the best of ways and features dialogue so sharp it could almost cut glass; all serving to elucidate the many complicated sides of one Benton Fraser.

The Underlying Problem by china_shop Fraser writes a letter to Ray Vecchio, detailing what Fraser and Ray Vecchio have been up to in Chicago since he went undercover, specifically the more intimate turn their relationship has taken. One of the funniest things I have read in a long long time and every time you think it can't get any funnier it tops itself again. Short, epistiolary and priceless

Un-American by jacquez -- A near-perfect example of everything that I truly adore in a Due South fic. Before he went undercover, Ray Kowalski was known in certain circles as the cop you could go to if you were in trouble and trust to help you out without caring if you were queer, but what happens when Kowalski disappears and there's no one to fill that roll in his place. I love this story from the bottom of my soul. It's sexy and angsty and heartfelt and real. It features a RayK who's unapologetic about his sexuality and a conversation between RayK and Stella that has firmly joined my list of favorite fanfic moments ever.

Saturday at the Garage by dira -- the actual first Due South fic I ever read, I'm not sure if I commented at the time, but I read this when

dira first posted it back in June because well, it was a slow day and there was this piece of fic on my friendslist from someone I knew and knew was a good writer and well I'd heard a lot about Due South and it was on my list of fandoms to check out eventually so... Now it turned out that it would be quite a few more months before I got a chance to seek out and read any more Due South and even longer before I got to see any of the canon, but this was definitely a lovely first taste. Fraser asks RayK to show him how to change the oil on a car. Serious, serious hotness ensues. There's hotness and paranoid Ray and Fraser taking chances and a really fabulous feel for the chemistry between the two characters
